Funny thing, Method, is that people either liked 'Jump' or they hated it; i personally liked it [4 a silly 'upbeat/happy/pop/rock' song! [img]tongue.gif[/img] ] - what really made that tune, IMHO, was the great classic EVH gtr solo sect'n, & the simple-yet-effective "deceptive-at-1st" rock-gruv that Alex puts under it [it's in 4/4, but he subs it into trips at 1st: 3, 3, then 2 [dwnbt on the 4+], [upbt on the 1+], etc ...
My fav tunes on 1984, tho, were 'Hot 4 Teach., Girl Gone Bad [aggressive, jammin rock tune; EVH's gtr sound is, as always, monstrous], & Top Jimmy;'...'Hot-' being a take-off of the classic Cobham [then SimonP/RodM, etc] DB-Shuf gruv, w/ an 'inverted jazz-swing' ride pattern [who'da thunkit [img]wink.gif[/img] ]; & 'Girl-' was just way cool [& very underrated/-played]...

Yea, Fuse, that section is great. They throw in some really cool things, without confusing anyone. I figured out that whole section, and to play it, the feel is so great. And the chorus of that tune, with the hh's and ride cymbal...again, very unusual but your average southerner with a bottle of bud in his hand is grooving to it like everyone else. More depth than meets the eye... 'can't you see me standing here I got my back against the wrecking machine...' Pretty cool.

I forgot to mention 'When the world is running down', one of my favorite Police tunes.

Joey Heredia's stuff on the older Tribal Tech self-titled CD is really nice. There's a tune on there called Dence Dance that has a groove that feels great and is really hard to play. He opens the hat a sixteenth after the downbeat and it flows very nicely. I heard Zach Danzinger do that with Wayne as well.

Overall Stewart Copelands stuff has always wowed me. His feel is nice while being fairly busy on the hat. I enjoy Dennis' fat grooves as well. Especially on Gary Willis' BENT. If you don't have that you should get it. Now I mean. Stop what you're doing and get it. Here is a link so you don't even have to search.

I agree Steve, Stewart always sounded good on vinyl. The hat sound was always so crisp and defined. He was an original- signature feel. Maybe it was growing up and living in all those lands as a military kid.

He was busy on the hats and almost never rolled down the toms for a fill. The toms always supported the groove. I remember seeing the live Police video in the mid 80's and he looked so loose and wild playing, but always sounded so good, especially on record.

I must say, a guy who never is mentioned is the cat from Supertramp. His fills as he pulled from the time were just different- stuff I would never naturally do. I always respect a drummer who sounds great live, and their live LP is excellent. His time and feel was solid- light touch and very musical.

I would add "Magic Man" & "Crazy On You" to your Derosier ["Barracuda" was a very cool tune - used to cover it in a former band]...

I believe Supertramp's drumr at the time was Bob C. Benberg, another 1 that i 4got to mention; very underrated - did some nice stuff; & very musical/pocket oriented..."Goodbye Stranger," "Take a look at my girlfriend...[song title?]", Breakfast In America, ST Live, etc etc...

Da** if i 4got to mention Stew C/Police [a good horse-whippin is due me..]

Also, John Keane, Prairie Prince, & Tris Imboden from Richard Marx's 1st solo album...

Barriemore Barlow, from Tull's 'Heavy Horses' & Yngwie's 1st album ['Now Your Ships r Burned,' etc]...

Chris Blackwell & Chris Hughes w/ Robert Plant...

John Blackwell, & any1 w/ Prince since the late-'80's-early-'90's] [ex.: "Diamonds & Pearls," "Morning Papers," etc]...

1 more Alex VH note: I hated his live drum solos [mindless rock/endless tom triplets/more for the visual show than anyth'g], but I loved the way he played in the tunes on their albums]...even tho it seems that they actually make a 'mistake' in Hot 4 Teach: 1/2way thru the gtr solo, the whole band goes into several synchopated triplet-patterns that r 'layered' over the DB swg/shuf/rock gruv, but musically it seems like they actually come out of them too quickly [in other words, they shouldve completed 10 full trip patts & ended on the next note [snare back/upbeat], w/ the next immediate note being the downbeat [the 1, thus "start'g" the gruv again]...seems like they "cut it [too] short of-"...too tired right now to try to document it without actual music notation...maybe later...if u listen to the tune, you'll "see" what i mean.... especially his work with the first two Edie Brickell & New Bohemians projects. There's a "latiny" feeling tune they did called Carmelito from Edie's Ghost of a Dog. Grooooooooovy.

The "Ghost of a Dog" is a killer album!!! I loved Matt C's playing on this! Also, another Matt that is cool is Matt Cameron from Soundgarden. Check out "Badmotorfinger", great playing there!!!!!

Oh yeah, how could I forget JD Blair on Victor Wooten's "What Did He Say?" cd. Mondo groove!!
